Arugam Bay - A Surfer's Paradise
Arugam is a small fishing village on Sri Lanka's East Coast. Surfers' discovery of the bay has made Arugam Bay one of the most sought-after surfing destinations in Sri Lanka tourism. One of the top ten surfing destinations in the world, the beautiful bay with its gorgeous sweeping sand, amazing swells, and long consistent breaks. The breathtaking scenery, sugar-sand beaches, and surrounding tropical forests teeming with exotic wildlife create an atmosphere that falls just short of being extravagantly exotic. This makes it an ideal place to unwind and let the sea entice you into snorkeling, swimming, and surfing while breathing a sigh of relief that you planned your volunteering and vacation well.The surfers will find three points on the stretch of beach that attracts surfers from around the world from April to October.Pottuvil Point which is an hour and a half away by a cab or a tuk tuk is considered by seasoned surfers to be out of a dream of. It is a deserted stretch of sandy beach strewn with huge boulders at the edge.
Arugam Point is the main break at Arugam Bay and draws the most surfers during the season. Crocodile Rock is the third and final of three. The possibility of seeing crocodiles, water buffalo, elephants, peacocks, eagles, or kingfishers that frequent the lagoon is an added bonus.
